Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to how flawless the diamond is and is graded in letters. FL stands for flawless, which means the diamond is completely clear with no marks inside. VS means “very small” inclusions. Inclusions are miniscule blemishes in the diamond but they aren’t visible to the naked eye. The clearer the diamond, the more it will sparkle. Some diamonds are dull and that is because they have many inclusions inside them, as well as poor colour. Clear diamonds are more expensive than diamonds with inclusions in them and a diamond that is graded F with colour D will be far more expensive than a Z diamond with many inclusions.

Diamond Clarity Grades and their Meaning

  • IF Internally Flawless This refers to a diamond that has no visible imperfections under 10 x magnifications, except perhaps only very small blemishes on the surface of the diamond, therefore it is called Internally Flawless.
  • VVS1 & VVS2 These refer to a diamond that has very slight inclusions. These diamonds are of exceptionally high quality and you can’t see the imperfections unless you look at the diamond under a microscope. These diamonds are very expensive, but it will also depend on the size of the stone.
  • VS1 & VS2 These refer to diamonds with very small imperfections that are not visible to the naked eye. They are still of excellent quality but are less expensive than VVS1 and VVS2 stones.
  • SI1 & SI2 These refer to diamonds with slight inclusions; these inclusions may be visible to the human eye. They are good stones but not as fine quality as VVS, VS or IF stones.
  • I1 This refers to diamonds with visible inclusions and imperfections that can be seen by a human eye. Therefore, they are poorer quality.
  • I2 & I3 These refer to diamonds that are of lower quality and they have imperfections that can be seen by human eye.

The best diamonds are therefore IF, VS and VVS stones. However, if these stones are too expensive for your budget, you should look for an SI1 or an SI2 stone with a D or G colour.
